ARFOR: Presenting our early findings

Our paper submission to the “Research Methodologies and Regional or Minority Language Research” Conference, Aberystwyth University on 9-10 July 2024.

Back at the end of last year we were commissioned, along with colleagues at Aberystwyth University and Wavehill, to evaluate the ARFOR 2 programme, an exercise described as “a joint venture by Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Gwynedd and Anglesey Councils which seeks to use entrepreneurship and economic development to support the heartlands of the Welsh language and, thus, maintain the language.”

We have already described in detail elsewhere one of the bespoke measures we have developed for examining the “sense of place” Wales has for itself. The paper we presented in July extended this, describing further some of the other work we have undertaken to develop measures that examine the ways the ARFOR regions use the Welsh language, embody Welsh values and explore the importance of place for private and public sector organisations.

All three of these indices use bespoke metrics designed and implemented for the ARFOR evaluation project.
